The rise of bone marrow organoids as next-generation models for blood formation and failure

Bone marrow organoids (BMOs) are three-dimensional cell culture models that mimic the architecture, cellular diversity, and function of the bone marrow niche. Offering a scalable, cost-effective alternative to animal models, BMOs enable personalized disease modeling and drug testing using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and are compatible with gene editing. Recent studies have established protocols and validated applications of BMOs in modeling inflammatory responses, rare bone marrow failure syndromes, and multiple myeloma, highlighting their transformative potential in hematopoietic research.
